On Sunday, May 9, AS Monaco faced off against Stade Reims away in a regular Ligue 1 fixture. Going into the match, Niko Kovac would have no doubt been very keen to score some crucial points, in order to secure the Principality side’s place in European competitions next year.
Fortunately for the visiting Monegasques, youngster Eliot Matazo picked the right time to score his first ever Ligue 1 goal. After some back and forth passing with Wissam Ben Yedder, the 19 year-old found the back of the net, bringing the scoreline to 0-1 at the 20th minute.
The second half of the match would not see anymore goals scored, as Monaco’s Benjamin Lecomte kept Reims’ Boulaye Dia safely at bay. Monaco were unable to double their lead as the match drew to a close, but kept their guard up to ensure a victory at the end of the day.
As the final whistle blew, Monaco celebrated a slim but deserved 0-1 victory over Reims, and took with them three crucial points in their mission to return to the Champions League. Monaco currently occupy third place in the Ligue 1 table, just two points behind Paris in second.
On Thursday, May 13, Monaco will face off against Rumilly Vallières in a first leg fixture of the French Cup semi-finals.
