The French prime minister said even less than usual at a press conference last week when asked if the country’s vaccination programme against coronavirus was producing results.

Blaming the threats posed by variants of the disease, he said that “we have a month, a month and a half, two very sensitive months” ahead.

However, he did concede that emphasis must be put on vaccination, and added that due to AstraZeneca doses remaining unused and available a great push would be made at the weekend.

Turning to another serious question, when restaurants might open, he said that during the second half of this year the government would continue state aid and “push” gastronomy.

In fact, France did manage to jab 220,000 people on Saturday alone.
