HSH Prince Albert has reacted to implied criticism by French political leaders over the Principality’s different approach to keeping businesses open during the coronavirus pandemic.

On Thursday evening the Sovereign said: “We have had an increase in cases with the influx of additional visitors during the holidays, and we have been reactive by sanctioning, for example, restaurant owners who do not follow the rules. So it’s a little easy for our French friends to say that Monaco is responsible for the increase in cases at home. We remain vigilant and should the situation deteriorate, we will take action immediately,” he said.

Prince Albert’s comments followed an interview given by Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi to French newspaper Liberation in which he implied that Monaco’s coronavirus restrictions – which allow restaurants to open under strict conditions – help spread coronavirus.
