A policeman checking vehicles at the Saint Roman roundabout had a narrow escape when a drunken driver nearly knocked him over while the officer was issuing a ticket to another motorist, according to a report in French-language Monaco Matin. However, another police officer saw the car approaching and warned him just in time.
The culprit, a 58 year-old Italian, also had a narrow squeak in court last week, when the tribunal decided not to send him to jail but to give him a suspended sentence of six months and an 18-month ban. He was also fined 45 euros.
The unemployed resident of Monaco had drunk a bottle of red wine before getting behind the steering wheel. “However, I didn’t feel drunk. I don’t really know what happened to me,” he told the court. He had been made redundant in January and has a dependent mother to look after, he added.
