France’s minister of culture Franck Riester has said that theatres may reopen in June, followed by cinemas in July.

“For cinemas, we are working on a reopening from July 1 or early July,” he said. The minister has been working with theatre owners on the use of social distancing and other health requirements so that they can open gradually next month. The opening of cinemas is likely to be nationwide, rather than limited to the present green zone.

The German authorities have already agreed that theatres can open their doors again during the next stage of deconfinement. Meanwhile, the country’s most populous state, North-Rhine Westphalia, has given the green light for cinemas to operate again from Saturday, May 30.
