Three crew members of a rescue helicopter were among the victims of the latest violent storms to hit the Riviera over the weekend of November 30 and December 1. Two others were both caught up in torrents of floodwater while trying to rescue livestock, while later in the day a sixth victim was discovered.
Two months of rain fell in the Cannes area on Sunday, and for a time the A8 motorway was closed in both directions. Rail traffic resumed on Monday, but disruptions continue.
The weekend’s red alert was the second within eight days, something that has never happened before. Meanwhile, the Monaco-PSG football game, due to start at 21:00 on Saturday, was postponed to a date to be announced.
The Var appears to have borne the brunt of the storm, but road closures were still in place inland from Menton at midday on Monday. Three thousand homes were without electricity on Monday morning.
