Lewis Hamilton defied his critics on Sunday, July 14, with a resounding win at the British Grand Prix. The previous day he had been told by a reporter that because he lives in Monaco and does not have an English accent, many people question his Britishness.
“So why do you think that people question your Britishness?” she asked. Appearing momentarily stumped for an answer, Hamilton responded by saying: “This is where my heart is – I am fully British. I guess over time I will do more positive things for the country. I go to these races and I lift the British flag proudly. There is no-one else in this sport that has raised it so high.”
And indeed, after his sixth win at Silverstone Hamilton proudly waved the Union Jack. He said: “I really just wanted to deliver and, when you achieve something like today and you see all those British flags, one day I will look back and have a picture of me in the car with that flag and I will always be able to look at that and smile until my dying day.”
Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas took second place and Monaco’s own Charles Leclerc came third for Ferrari.
