The Principality’s middle school students are set to begin the academic year in a state-of-the-art educational facility on the Îlot Pasteur, replacing the outdated and overcrowded Charles III College. The new school, located at 7 Promenade Honoré II, will accommodate up to 1,500 students at full capacity. The facility is scheduled for an official inauguration in mid-September, with HSH Prince Albert expected to attend alongside the students.
Designed by Monegasque architect François Lallemand and his agency, Square Architecte, the 23,000-square-meter institution posed a significant technical challenge due to Monaco’s dense and limited space. The building features an innovative blend of concrete and steel, with X-shaped metal structures that serve both aesthetic and structural purposes, a first in Monaco’s architectural landscape.
The school boasts modern amenities, including classrooms for 25 students each, a multi-sport gymnasium, a 300-seat amphitheater, and a 25-meter swimming pool. Students will enjoy two recreation areas: a ground-level space for younger students and a rooftop area offering panoramic views of Fontvieille’s port and the Prince’s Palace.
Centrally located, the school is easily accessible by foot for 90 percent of the students, a marked improvement from the more remote Charles III College. Additionally, a new public parking facility with 816 spaces has been opened to support those arriving by car. Enhancing the educational environment, a new 3,200-square-meter media library is slated to open nearby in early 2025.
