Monaco has completed the first phase of an underwater clean-up operation at Port Hercule, with the Maritime Affairs Department working alongside the Maritime Police, firefighters and Carabiniers to remove waste from the seabed and protect the port’s marine environment.

The operation has been running since the beginning of the summer, with the latest dive taking place on Monday morning, October 12, marking the completion of the initial phase.

The initiative focuses on cleaning the seabed around the Port Hercule breakwater, where waste can accumulate beneath the surface despite the port’s regular maintenance and waste-management measures.

The clean-up has involved cooperation between several of the Principality’s public services, bringing together maritime specialists and emergency personnel to help maintain the condition of the harbour.

Port Hercule is one of Monaco’s principal maritime hubs, welcoming a wide range of vessels throughout the year, including large yachts during major events such as the Monaco Yacht Show. Maintaining the surrounding marine environment is an important part of the Principality’s wider efforts to promote responsible yachting and protect its coastline.

The completion of the first phase marks a milestone in the ongoing work to keep the harbour’s seabed clean. The Maritime Affairs Department said the operation was intended both to improve the cleanliness of the seabed and to contribute to the preservation of the port environment.

The clean-up forms part of Monaco’s broader environmental efforts to safeguard its marine areas, with public services continuing to work together on initiatives aimed at reducing pollution and protecting the waters around the Principality.
