A 38-year-old Monegasque man has been sentenced to 10 months in prison, nine suspended, after dragging his wife several metres with his car during a dispute over their children…

As reported by Monaco-Matin, the incident occurred on September 25, when the man arrived at his estranged wife’s home to collect their two children amid contentious divorce proceedings.

Concerned that her husband had been drinking, the woman contacted police. As she stood beside the vehicle holding their daughter’s hand, with her arm inside the car, he accelerated away, dragging her along the road before she fell. The incident was captured on CCTV, whilst police heard the confrontation over the telephone. The woman suffered injuries requiring three days of medical incapacity.

The driver was stopped near the Cap-d’Ail border and subsequently tested over the legal alcohol limit. Appearing before Monaco’s Criminal Court on Friday, October 9, he denied deliberately injuring his wife, claiming he had not realised she was holding the vehicle.

Judges rejected his explanation, imposing two years’ probation, a nine-month driving suspension and an 18-month restriction on contacting his wife, with exceptions for parental responsibilities. He must also pay €1,000 in provisional compensation pending further assessment of the victim’s injuries.
