Three Monegasque students will travel to Strasbourg next month to take part in a Council of Europe conference on young people and disinformation, after sharing their experience with classmates at Lycée Albert Ier.
The session on Thursday, October 8 was organised by the Prince’s Government as part of Monaco’s presidency of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers. Its theme was “Disinformation: what are the challenges, and what are the responses?”
Journalists, researchers and Council of Europe experts spoke to pupils about how disinformation works, how to check information and why critical thinking matters. The three students heading to Strasbourg, who will attend the conference “Young People Facing Disinformation” in November, then told their classmates about their own experience.
The conference is on November 9 and 10, just as Monaco’s presidency, which runs from May 15 to November 10, comes to an end. It brings together young people from across the Council of Europe’s member states, journalists, content creators and specialists in countering disinformation, for a high-level conference followed by workshops.
The Lycée Albert Ier session continues the Council of Europe’s “Journalists Matter” campaign, which argues that journalists are essential to verifying facts and that disinformation spreads more easily where they are unsafe. The Monaco Government launched a programme on the theme in June, including a call for applications and an audiovisual awareness campaign aimed at young people.
