The Monaco Audiovisual Institute has launched the 23rd season of The Art of Cinema, with a major tribute to French filmmaker Jacques Tati running throughout the new programme…
The season opened at the Grimaldi Forum with Tati’s Playtime, described by Institute director Vincent Vatrican as an “absolute masterpiece”. The 1967 film offers Tati’s distinctive vision of an increasingly modern and sanitised society, combining influences from American slapstick comedy with an unmistakably French perspective.
Tati provides the central theme, but the first quarter will travel much further afield. French and American cinema will feature alongside films from Italy, Norway, the Czech Republic, Germany and Japan. Restored classics will be shown alongside recent productions that have not previously reached cinemas in Monaco or Nice.
The programme will also continue several established collaborations. The Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra will accompany Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times for this season’s film concert, whilst the Prince’s Palace presentation devoted to the royal wedding film will return at the Grimaldi Forum on October 16.
A new initiative will also open the Institute’s archives to the public every Monday at 15:00, offering the chance to discover rare and sometimes previously unseen footage from Monaco’s past.
