Monacoeur has spent six years developing its cardiac digital identity system, which uses high-resolution sensors to capture tiny variations in an individual’s cardiac signal. Its developers say differences in heart geometry, arteries and other physiological characteristics combine to create a distinctive signature that can be used for identification.
The technology remains under development, although the company has produced its first prototype. Monacoeur says former employees of cryptocurrency security company Ledger have contributed to the project, whilst its team has also sought specialist engineers from international laboratories.
The start-up is now looking to raise funding and secure a partner to complete development before producing around 50 units for testing. According to the company, a major Monaco-based business has already expressed interest in working with the technology.
Potential applications could extend well beyond everyday digital access. Monacoeur believes sectors requiring particularly strong data protection, including the pharmaceutical industry and military, could eventually adopt cardiac authentication as an additional security tool as concerns surrounding cyberattacks continue to grow.
