Their Serene Highnesses Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene, along with Hereditary Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella will make a public visit to Les Baux-de-Provence on Saturday, September 5, celebrating centuries of ties between the village and Monaco’s Grimaldi family…
The connection dates to the Treaty of Péronne, concluded between King Louis XIII and Prince Honoré II. In 1642, the lordship of Les Baux became a marquisate and was granted to Hercule Grimaldi, son of the Monegasque sovereign. Since then, the title Marquis des Baux has traditionally belonged to Monaco’s heir to the throne and was therefore bestowed upon Prince Jacques at his birth in 2014.
During Saturday’s visit, the Princely Family will be welcomed by Mayor Anne Poniatowski for an official ceremony at the former château. Prince Jacques will symbolically receive the keys to the village, echoing the same gesture made to his father during a 1982 visit attended by Princess Grace.
The family will also visit Saint-Vincent Church, whose striking stained-glass windows were created by Max Ingrand and gifted by Prince Rainier III following Albert’s birth.
A Monaco postage stamp depicting one of the windows will be issued to commemorate the visit, continuing a celebration of the historic connection that also saw the Marquisate of Les Baux featured on a Monegasque €2 commemorative coin in 2025.
