Working from a small workshop inside a barbershop at 31 Boulevard des Moulins, leather specialist François Magnen restores ageing pieces with an emphasis on preserving their original character rather than simply making them look new.
His work ranges from restoring delicate vintage handbags to repairing marks on car headrests and steering wheels. Each piece is carefully assessed before treatment and is handled with patience and precision, essential when dealing with older, fragile leather.
One of François’ specialities is creating bespoke dyes using pigments that penetrate the leather rather than applying a layer of surface paint. The technique, he says, produces a more natural and durable result similar to the original manufacturing process.
His strongest advice for owners is surprisingly simple: if leather becomes stained or damaged, do nothing. Household products and attempted DIY repairs can make the problem significantly harder to reverse.
François is now preparing a multi-level leather restoration training programme, alongside an app designed to simplify appointment bookings.
