AS Monaco secured their place in the Conference League for the first time in the club’s history on the evening of Thursday, August 27, brushing aside Górnik Zabrze 4-1 at Stade Louis-II to complete a 7-3 aggregate victory over the second leg of their play-off tie.
Having already claimed a 3-2 win in Poland a week earlier and followed it up four days later with a 1-0 opening-day Ligue 1 win away to Le Havre, Monaco arrived at this fixture on the back of two straight victories, needing only to build on their first-leg advantage to confirm their spot in this year’s C4 league phase. Head coach Filipe Luís, speaking ahead of the match, warned his players not to underestimate the Polish side, pointing out that Górnik had caused serious problems for Champions League-level opposition Fenerbahçe earlier in their European campaign, avoiding defeat in Poland before narrowly losing the return leg.
Luís kept faith with the same starting eleven that had beaten Le Havre at the weekend, with Eric Dier, the goalscorer and Man of the Match in that win, retaining his place at centre-back alongside summer signing Sadibou Sané. Paris Brunner, who had scored the decisive header in the first leg and also earned Man of the Match honours, was again selected to lead the line.
Monaco dominated possession from the outset but struggled initially to break down a deep, compact Górnik defence, with early efforts from Denis Zakaria and Brunner both missing the target. Górnik registered the game’s first shot on target through Maksym Khlan, comfortably saved by Lukáš Hrádecký, before Monaco finally broke the deadlock in the 30th minute, Brunner curling a superb strike under the crossbar following a smart lay-off from Mamadou Coulibaly.
The lead was doubled just before half-time. After Górnik’s Ukrainian winger sent a free-kick well wide and Flávio Nazinho was denied at the last moment by goalkeeper Philipp Schulze, Coulibaly himself struck powerfully into the roof of the net in first-half stoppage time to make it 2-0 at the break.
Monaco wasted little time adding a third after the restart, with Aleksandr Golovin coolly finishing left-footed following a high ball recovery in the 50th minute. The tempo eased as both sides made a string of substitutions, though Khlan forced another save from Hrádecký shortly after the hour mark. Monaco’s fourth arrived in the 78th minute, as Mika Biereth pounced on a spilled effort from substitute Mathys Detourbet to make it 4-0. Górnik pulled a consolation goal back through French forward Janis Antiste in the 83rd minute, finishing well after being found inside the box, but it proved no more than a footnote as the match finished 4-1.
The result marks AS Monaco’s tenth European campaign since returning to Ligue 1 in the 2013-2014 season, second among French clubs over that period behind only Paris Saint-Germain’s 14, and ahead of both Olympique Lyonnais and Olympique de Marseille, level on ten apiece.
