At Port Hercule, the Solarium at the end of the breakwater has emerged as a particularly popular spot, offering an impressive variety of species and a relaxed setting for an evening by the water.
Young anglers Andrea and William told Monaco Info that fishing here can produce everything from sardines and sea bream to conger eels, scorpionfish and barracuda. The preferred hours are decidedly nocturnal, with enthusiasts typically arriving from around 9pm and continuing until 6am.
There is plenty of variety in technique, too. More experienced fishermen might try jigging or larger lures, while beginners can keep things simple with a weight, a small sardine bait and a little patience. For the two young enthusiasts, however, the appeal goes beyond the catch: after a busy year of studying, fishing offers a chance to slow down, spend time with friends and enjoy Monaco from a different perspective.
Fishing from the shore in Monaco is free, although recreational anglers must first declare their activity and catches to the Maritime Affairs Department.
And one final rule: never wish a fisherman good luck. Apparently, that only brings the opposite.
