Monaco is introducing stricter fire safety measures for nightclubs, restaurants, bars and other entertainment venues following the fatal fire that occurred on New Year’s Day in the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana…
The Princely Government said the changes form part of a broader initiative to strengthen fire safety standards in establishments open to the public whilst helping to reduce the risk of further tragedy.
Since the beginning of the year, the Technical Commission for Hygiene, Safety and Environmental Protection has increased inspections of nightlife venues across the Principality. The unannounced visits assess fire safety during normal operations and, where necessary, require corrective measures and explain how they should be implemented.
These inspections have focused on the risks associated with the use of flames, the compliance of materials and decorations, the suitability of detection and alarm systems, and the presence of appropriate, unobstructed emergency exits.
A revision to Monaco’s fire safety regulations will be published in the Journal de Monaco on July 31. The updated rules introduce a general prohibition on the use or introduction of naked flames in public areas, regardless of occupancy levels. This includes candles, pyrotechnics, fireworks and any device capable of producing a flame or combustion for decorative, celebratory or food-related purposes.
Exemptions may be granted on a case-by-case basis where additional safety measures are approved. The Government has also reminded operators that venues offering DJs, amplified music or dancing are subject to the fire safety requirements applicable to nightclubs.
