The Monaco Nautical Society is introducing a new generation to the sport of sea rowing this summer through a series of training camps designed for children aged 10 to 16…

Held over five days, the courses combine practical instruction on the water with lessons in safety, navigation and rowing technique, giving young participants the skills needed to handle a boat confidently. Morning sessions take place at sea, when conditions are calmer and maritime traffic is lighter, before afternoons are devoted to technical exercises, indoor rowing, equipment maintenance and further time on the water.

The programme caters for both complete beginners and returning rowers. More experienced participants help newcomers prepare the boats and adjust the equipment before launching, fostering a strong sense of teamwork alongside individual development.

Coach Céline Marion said the unusual nature of rowing, where athletes travel with their backs to the direction of movement, requires a gradual and confidence-building approach. Fun exercises are used throughout the week to help children become comfortable on the water whilst learning the discipline’s core techniques and values.

On the final day, participants complete an assessment to demonstrate they can navigate safely at sea. Successful candidates earn a state-recognised qualification validating their ability to row independently, providing a foundation for those wishing to continue the sport beyond the summer holidays.
