Monaco officially inaugurated its presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on Wednesday May 20, during a series of ceremonies and meetings in Strasbourg marking a historic milestone for the Principality…
Led by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Isabelle Berro-Amadeï and Monaco’s Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe Gabriel Revel, the Monegasque delegation formally opened the six-month presidency with the first Committee of Ministers meeting chaired under Monaco’s leadership.
The day also featured an official handover ceremony held on the forecourt of the Council of Europe, symbolising the transfer of responsibility to the Principality. Monaco succeeds Moldova at a time when the organisation continues to address major European challenges including democracy, human rights, the rule of law and international cooperation.
The Monegasque presidency also set a strong cultural tone from the outset. Pianist Stella Almondo performed a recital at the foyer of the Committee of Ministers, underlining Monaco’s intention to place culture and artistic dialogue at the centre of its programme over the coming months.
The presidency represents a significant diplomatic moment for Monaco, which joined the Council of Europe in 2004 and is assuming leadership of the organisation for the first time in its history.
