Cinema lovers in Monaco will have the opportunity to rediscover one of the great landmarks of modern European cinema on May 11th,  as the Institut Audiovisuel de Monaco presents a special screening of Paris, Texas at the Théâtre des Variétés…

Directed by Wim Wenders and winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, the film remains widely regarded as one of the defining works of 1980s auteur cinema. The story follows a mysterious drifter who reappears in the Californian desert after disappearing for four years, gradually attempting to reconnect with his family while confronting questions of memory, identity and belonging.

Speaking ahead of the screening, Institut Audiovisuel director Vincent Vatrican described the film as both deeply emotional and intellectually engaging, placing viewers “in the position of an investigator” as the story slowly reveals the reasons behind the central character’s disappearance.

Vatrican also highlighted the film’s importance within Wim Wenders’ career, noting that the Palme d’Or helped introduce the German director to a much wider international audience while maintaining the artistic qualities that defined his work.

The screening forms part of the institute’s ongoing efforts to encourage audiences in Monaco to experience classic cinema on the big screen.
