For the first time in its history, Monaco has hosted a meeting of the Political Affairs and Democracy Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe…

The two-day gathering, held at the Novotel, brought together parliamentarians from across the continent to discuss major international issues at a time of heightened geopolitical tension.

Organised at the initiative of Monaco’s National Council, the meeting reflects the Principality’s growing role within European institutions. Delegates are addressing a range of topics including the challenges facing democratic systems, the protection of human rights and the rule of law across the 46 member states of the Council of Europe. Current international developments, including the situation in Ukraine and tensions affecting other regions, are also expected to form part of the discussions.

Speaking at the opening session, Minister of State Christophe Mirmand underlined the importance of the meeting as Monaco prepares to assume the presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe later this year. It will mark the first time the Principality has held the role since joining the organisation in 2004.

Officials from the Princely Government and the National Council have been preparing for several months for this responsibility, which will begin on May 15, 2026. The presidency represents both an honour and a significant diplomatic milestone, reinforcing Monaco’s commitment to dialogue, cooperation and the strengthening of democratic institutions across Europe.
