The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation continues its international mission in the United States through its American branch, which has been working with the YMCA of San Francisco for the past seven years…

The partnership offers free swimming and water safety lessons to hundreds of children from disadvantaged communities. During the first sessions, young beginners often arrive with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension. Instructors adapt their teaching to each child, helping them build confidence in the water while learning essential safety skills. The programme aims not only to teach swimming but also to develop resilience and self-confidence among participants.

The initiative addresses a significant social challenge. In the United States, more than 40 million people live below the poverty line, and the situation is particularly visible in cities such as San Francisco. Many families supported by the YMCA live on modest incomes, yet programmes like these help ensure children still have access to educational and sporting opportunities.

The project was launched in 2019 after discussions between Monaco’s Consul in San Francisco and local YMCA leaders. It now forms part of the Foundation’s wider efforts to prevent drowning and promote water safety worldwide.

Active in around fifty countries, the Princess Charlene Foundation uses sport as a tool for education and inclusion. In California, where drowning prevention has recently become a priority for public authorities, the programme is helping equip young people with skills that can ultimately save lives.
