Water may be invisible in daily life, but in Monaco it remains one of the Principality’s most precious and strategic resources, and on the evening of 3 February, it was firmly in the spotlight at a high-level conference organised by World Women Leaders Monaco…
Held at the Yacht Club de Monaco, the event brought together experts, policymakers and decision-makers to explore how the Principality has transformed a natural constraint into a model of innovation, resilience and collective responsibility. From supply security to long-term preservation, the discussion focused on understanding water better in order to protect it for future generations.
Moderated by Céline Caron-Dagioni, Government Advisor–Minister of Equipment, Environment and Urban Planning, the conference provided a clear overview of Monaco’s water strategy, combining technological expertise with environmental ambition. She was joined by Manuel Nardi, General Manager of the Société Monégasque des Eaux (SMEAUX), who detailed the operational realities of managing water in a territory with no natural freshwater sources.
Speakers highlighted how Monaco relies on advanced desalination, rigorous monitoring and a culture of efficiency to guarantee high-quality drinking water while limiting waste. Beyond infrastructure, the emphasis was placed on shared responsibility — from public authorities and private operators to residents and businesses — in safeguarding this vital resource.
The discussion also addressed the broader global context, with climate change, population growth and increasing pressure on water supplies reinforcing the urgency of sustainable management. Monaco’s approach, blending innovation, governance and education, was presented as a potential reference model beyond its borders.
By placing water at the heart of public debate, today’s conference underlined a clear message: preserving this essential resource is not just a technical challenge, but a collective commitment to the future.
