The International Festival of the Cirque de Monte-Carlo returned in spectacular fashion on the evening of Friday, January 16, as the 48th edition of the iconic event officially opened beneath the Chapiteau de l’Espace Fontvieille. One of Monaco’s most enduring cultural traditions, the festival once again brought together world-class circus talent and an audience steeped in history, prestige and anticipation.

The opening night was held in the presence of Prince Albert II and Princess Stéphanie, alongside Louis Ducruet and Camille Gottlieb, underlining the continued bond between the Princely Family and an event that has shaped Monaco’s cultural identity for decades. The evening also marked the launch of the 13th edition of the New Generation programme, dedicated to showcasing emerging artists and ensuring the future of circus arts remains vibrant and innovative.

The first selection show offered a diverse and international programme, reflecting the global reach of the festival. Performers from Europe, Asia and the Americas took to the ring, presenting a wide spectrum of disciplines that blended athletic prowess, technical mastery and visual creativity. From large-scale group performances to more intimate individual routines, the evening highlighted the evolving face of contemporary circus.

Audiences were treated to a balanced mix of aerial acts, acrobatics, juggling, equestrian performances and inventive mechanical displays, alongside routines focused on precision, balance and artistry. The New Generation acts were seamlessly integrated into the programme, reinforcing the festival’s role as both a guardian of tradition and a launchpad for the stars of tomorrow.

Running until Sunday, January 25, the 48th International Festival of the Cirque de Monte-Carlo once again positions the Principality at the heart of the circus world. By blending heritage with innovation and welcoming talent from across the globe, the festival continues to affirm Monaco’s status as the world capital of circus arts, all under one unforgettable big top.
