Monaco Town Hall has warned residents to be on their guard after a new impersonation scam surfaced, involving a man falsely claiming to represent the municipality.
The individual has reportedly been knocking on doors while posing as a city-employed handyman, telling residents he has been sent to inspect heating systems. The visit, officials say, is entirely bogus and designed to pressure victims into handing over money.
Municipal leaders have reiterated that city employees do not make unsolicited home visits of any kind. Residents who encounter suspicious behaviour are advised to decline any interaction and notify the Police Department without delay.
This latest alert follows another attempted fraud uncovered just before Christmas, when a scammer claimed to work for municipal social services linked to the Lamartine space. Victims were contacted directly and offered a home visit to “complete” their registration, complete with the lure of a complimentary box of chocolates — a sweetener that, unsurprisingly, masked a scam.
With fraud attempts spiking during the holiday season, Town Hall says it will file a formal complaint and is urging the public to remain vigilant.
The message from the authorities is blunt: the town hall doesn’t cold-call, doesn’t knock unexpectedly, and definitely doesn’t ask for money on your doorstep. If someone says otherwise, they’re lying.
