The Carmelite Chapel has become one of Monaco’s most enchanting festive destinations this year thanks to an extraordinary nativity scene that has captured the imagination of visitors of all ages…
Far from a traditional display, this remarkable installation, composed of thousands of individually placed pieces,is a work of devotion, storytelling and artistic ingenuity. Its creator, Father Jésus, welcomed Monaco Info to explore the scene, which invites contemplation through layers of symbolism, detail and emotion.
The nativity unfolds along a carefully designed reading path. On one side sits the timeless mystery of Christ’s birth; on the other, the figure of evil, a reminder of humanity’s struggles. At the centre lies a profound meditation on waiting—echoing the apostles who slept in Gethsemane and prompting a modern question: Would we keep watch today, or lose ourselves in distraction?

Blending eras and aesthetics, the nativity juxtaposes Bethlehem with elements from contemporary life and even distant historical periods. Some pieces move, others remain still; all were placed by hand in long night after long night of creative work. Asked to estimate how many elements the display contains, Father Jésus simply smiles: “Mathematics has no place in a nativity scene, only the heart, the love, and the dedication behind it.”
Visitors say they return year after year because the nativity is never the same, Father Jésus continually adds new characters and surprises. Children delight in whimsical touches like chairlifts and dinosaurs, while adults appreciate its layered spiritual meaning.
More than a Christmas decoration, this nativity is a living narrative, crafted with passion. A QR code at the entrance allows guests to explore its full story, making this year’s Carmelite Chapel display a must-see for the festive season.
