Monaco’s firefighters marked the feast of Sainte-Barbe, their patron saint, with the annual ceremony that remains one of the most symbolic dates in the life of the Corps…

On December 4, His Serene Highness Prince Albert II attended the traditional Mass at the Cathedral, alongside Minister of State Christophe Mirmand and numerous dignitaries. Celebrated by Archbishop Dominique-Marie David, the service paid tribute to Sainte-Barbe, long venerated as the protector of all who face fire, explosions, and danger.

For the firefighters of the Principality, the day is far more than a religious observance. It is a moment of unity, pride, and reflection,  an opportunity to highlight their year’s work, honour their elders, and reaffirm their commitment to serving Monaco with skill and sacrifice. As Fire Chief Lieutenant-Colonel Maxime Ivrar explained, the presence of the Sovereign underscores the esteem in which the Corps is held and the vital role it plays in the safety of the nation.

Following the Mass, the ceremony continued with the Chief’s annual address, detailing major operations, institutional milestones, and ongoing developments within the Corps. Guests then gathered for a reception, allowing firefighters to meet with officials, partners, and former colleagues.

Lieutenant-Colonel Ivrar also emphasised the evolving complexity of their work: new technologies, electric and hydrogen vehicles, and modern materials require constant training, investment, and adaptation. With more than 10,000 interventions expected this year, a historic first,  the Monaco Fire Brigade continues to expand its capabilities under a long-term development plan approved by the Prince’s Government.

Sainte-Barbe remains a powerful reminder of the courage and solidarity at the heart of the profession, values embodied every day by Monaco’s firefighters.
