This Thursday, November 6, His Serene Highness Prince Albert II delivered a speech at the plenary session of the Summit of Heads of State at the 30th United Nations Climate Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil…
Addressing delegates, the Sovereign warned that “science today faces the perils of ideology and relativism as it has never been so safe, so accessible, so clear: as it crosses global boundaries year after year, humanity has never been so threatened by climate change than today.” Placed under the chairmanship of André Corrêa do Lago, this edition brings together world leaders, scientists, NGOs, and civil society representatives to discuss urgent measures to address the climate emergency. COP30 focuses on maintaining the global temperature limit of 1.5°C, the presentation of new nationally determined contributions (NDCs), and the evaluation of financial commitments made during COP29.
During the opening of the two-day World Leaders Climate Action Summit, HSH Prince Albert II also met with His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales to discuss shared environmental priorities and global cooperation. The Sovereign congratulated Prince William on the success of The Earthshot Prize, which continues to honour innovative environmental initiatives worldwide.
The summit, inaugurated by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, brings together more than 60 heads of state and government, including Emmanuel Macron, Keir Starmer, Gustavo Petro, and Pedro Sánchez. In his opening speech, President Lula called this conference the “COP of the truth,” urging nations to confront reality and meet their Paris Agreement commitments.
For Prince Albert II, a long-standing advocate for ocean and climate protection through his Foundation, COP30 represents a pivotal moment to reaffirm Monaco’s role in advancing science-based action and collective responsibility for the planet’s future.
