Speaking at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Tuesday morning, His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco urged the international community to return to the founding principles of the UN as the conflict in Ukraine drags on…
The Sovereign delivered his remarks at 9:45 a.m. local time, shortly after a brief exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the General Assembly.
“We live in a multipolar world where national interests tend to primarily focus on the pursuit of a common international ideal,” Prince Albert II said, framing his appeal within a broader call for renewed international security. He noted that the increasing number of peacekeeping operations worldwide shows that dialogue and preventive diplomacy “have not always produced the expected results,” leaving international security “gravely under threat.”
Prince Albert II stressed that rising regional tensions and conflicts make it essential to reaffirm the UN’s core principles: respect for state sovereignty, the peaceful settlement of disputes, adherence to international law and the protection of human rights. He reiterated Monaco’s “strong condemnation” of the war of aggression against Ukraine and the suffering inflicted on civilians.
“I was able to reiterate this message a few moments ago to President Volodymyr Zelensky,” he said, expressing hope that a “fair, sustainable and negotiated peace agreement” can soon be reached, one that guarantees security and meets the aspirations of the Ukrainian people.
Prince Albert II’s intervention reflects Monaco’s consistent stance at the UN since 2022, combining support for Ukraine’s sovereignty with calls for diplomacy and multilateral cooperation. His words added the Principality’s voice to growing appeals for a fresh push towards peace as the war enters its third year.
