Fresh from his address at the United Nations, His Serene Highness Prince Albert II was honoured on Monday evening by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA) during its traditional State Dinner in New York…
Created in 1918, the FPA is a politically independent organisation that promotes informed public engagement on U.S. and global foreign policy issues. Each year it brings together leading voices in diplomacy, business and culture to discuss the world’s most pressing challenges.
This year’s dinner, which welcomed around 160 guests, placed a special emphasis on cultural diplomacy and environmental stewardship. The organisation’s highest distinction – the FPA Medal – was presented to Prince Albert II in recognition of his long-standing commitment to ocean conservation and sustainable development.
Introducing the award, FPA leaders underlined the Prince’s international leadership on combating plastic pollution, protecting marine biodiversity and raising awareness of the effects of climate change. “The environment is of great interest to our membership,” one board member noted, “and Prince Albert II has fully earned this medal through his tireless advocacy.”
In his acceptance speech, the Sovereign Prince reiterated that the oceans must be viewed not only as an environmental priority but also as a central element of today’s geopolitical challenges. He urged governments and civil society alike to act with determination and to embrace cooperation across borders.
The evening provided a high-profile moment for Monaco’s global environmental diplomacy just as the 80th United Nations General Assembly opened its general debate on Tuesday morning with more than 150 heads of state and government expected to speak.
