MaConsigne, Monaco’s reusable container scheme, is quietly chalking up an impressive environmental victory as it approaches its third anniversary. Launched on 13 June 2022, MaConsigne is part of the Principality’s drive to eliminate single-use plastics from takeaway sales by 2030. Its mission is simple: cut waste at the source and champion the circular economy — and so far, it’s succeeding.
According to figures released this week, the system has already avoided more than seven tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions compared to the incineration of plastic containers. Around 85,000 containers have been used and reused since launch, with each one racking up an average of more than 13 uses — a level of efficiency that would make even the most hardened sceptic pause for thought.
MaConsigne’s operation is straightforward and free. Users download the app, create an account, and present their identifier when picking up their meal, receiving a reusable glass container. Unlike plastic, glass preserves both the taste of food and consumers’ health — importantly, it’s free from PFAS, the so-called “forever chemicals”. After eating, users have 14 days to drop the unwashed container at one of 26 collection points dotted around Monaco. The app not only maps out participating restaurants and collection bins, but also tracks usage.
In a clever twist, there’s no upfront cost for the containers. Only if a container is not returned within the time limit is a seven euro fee charged — making it a low-risk, high-impact gesture for anyone grabbing lunch on the go.
Today, MaConsigne boasts 24 participating outlets, a steady circulation of around 3,000 containers a month, and 1,655 active users, including businesses, universities, hotels, a healthcare facility, and even event organisers. The initiative has expanded too: since June 2024, Carrefour Fontvieille’s salad bar, Picadeli, has been fully integrated into the scheme.
To boost engagement, an incentive programme rewards users through referrals and a “Best User of the Month” prize. Meanwhile, three “ambassador” retirees are starring in a promotional video aired on Monaco Info and the Government’s social media channels, sharing their own experiences and encouraging others to ditch disposable plastics.
