The Principality has launched a new public awareness campaign highlighting the importance of ‘identitovigilance’ — the process of verifying patient identity to ensure the right care is delivered to the right person.

Operating under the slogan “To be treated properly, I must be properly identified”, the campaign forms part of Monaco’s ongoing commitment to healthcare quality and safety. It will be rolled out across all medical facilities within the Principality.

Identitovigilance refers to a set of procedures that help both administrative and medical teams confirm a patient’s identity before providing care. A simple mistake — mixing up patients with similar names, for example — can lead to serious medical errors, making identity checks a shared responsibility.

To help prevent such incidents, patients are encouraged to present valid identification during appointments, respond to identity verification questions from staff, and double-check that their medical records are correctly labelled.

Whether records are paper-based or digital, adopting these reflexes is a crucial first step in building a safer healthcare journey for every patient in Monaco. A visual campaign is already underway across the Principality to raise public awareness and promote good practices.

Christophe Robino, Government Councillor and Minister of Social Affairs and Health, said: “This campaign reflects the Princely Government’s commitment to a healthcare system that is safe, responsible, and respectful of the individual — so that each patient becomes an active participant in their own safety.”
