Monaco has introduced new regulations governing helicopter services between the Principality and Nice Côte d’Azur Airport, potentially paving the way for greater competition on one of the Riviera’s most important transport links…
Published in the latest Journal de Monaco, Sovereign Ordinance No. 12.167 establishes the procedure for authorising airlines to operate scheduled flights between Monaco Heliport and Nice.
The legislation follows a Franco-Monegasque agreement signed in June, allowing each country to designate up to two operators for the route. Applications will be assessed against several criteria, including ticket prices, service quality, environmental performance, noise levels and the potential benefits of increased competition.
Successful operators may receive authorisations lasting up to five years, providing a regulatory framework for the development of scheduled helicopter connections. The Monaco–Nice route offers a rapid alternative to travelling by road, particularly during periods of heavy traffic along the Côte d’Azur.
Greater competition could eventually benefit passengers through improved services and more competitive fares, although the new regulations do not automatically guarantee additional operators or flights.
For now, the ordinance establishes the framework for future applications, marking a potential step towards expanding transport options between Monaco and its principal international airport.
