Just over three months after winning an unprecedented set of French titles, the Roca Team has been placed in a state of insolvency by a Monaco court, bringing the club one step from liquidation.
The ruling came on Wednesday, October 7, a day later than expected. The court found that the club was in “cessation de paiements”, the legal term for being unable to pay its debts, with effect from July 1, according to Nice Premium. The club has 15 days to appeal.
The decision follows a hearing on Friday, October 2, at which the club’s liabilities were put at €27.8 million. Sports Illustrated France says €21.7 million of that is a loan from the Monegasque state granted earlier this year. Reports also suggest that about 20 employees had still not been paid their September wages.
The club is only expected to appeal if the Paris administrative court orders, in urgent proceedings, that Monaco be allowed to enter Nationale 1, according to Bebasket. The Fédération française de basket (FFBB) had already refused that entry, and the French Olympic committee (CNOSF) backed it. The club was also excluded from the top two divisions and from European competition.
It is a sharp fall for a team that finished last season as French champions, with four national trophies and a first ever quadruple in the history of the league. Monaco were also EuroLeague finalists in 2025.
In a statement, the club looked back on the 12 years since it rebuilt its project, listing three French titles, four Leaders Cups, two French Cups and a Supercup, and thanked its supporters. It said it hopes to return one day to the highest level, and to see the Roca Team back at the Salle Gaston Médecin.
If the club is liquidated, men’s basketball in the Principality would continue only through the association’s amateur side, which plays in Nationale 3, the fifth tier in France. The women’s team of Monaco Basket Association, playing in LF2, the second tier, will also use the Salle Gaston Médecin this season.
