Monaco Rugby Sevens (MR7) have booked their place in the semi-finals of the In Extenso Supersevens’ second summer leg in Pau, beating Union Bordeaux-Bègles Sevens 17-7 in a hard-fought quarter-final tie.
The win continues a strong start to the season for the Monégasque side, who opened this year’s revamped two-leg format by winning the opening stage in Biarritz on August 21-22, beating Toulon and Racing 92 in the pool stages before eliminating Pau 21-0 in the quarter-final, Toulouse 26-17 in the semi-final, and Toulon 21-12 in the final to claim the opening leg title.
Speaking after their victory over UBB, the team credited the result to fighting spirit and squad cohesion, which proved decisive in a contest that went right down to the wire.
Monaco enters this year’s competition with a strong pedigree in French sevens rugby, having previously won the Supersevens title outright in 2022, reached the final as runners-up in 2021, and topped the regular season standings in 2024 before a seventh-place finish at that year’s final tournament. This year’s tournament also introduced a significantly revamped format, trimming the competition from three summer legs to two, expanding each event to a full two days of action, and, for the first time, giving the men’s and women’s competitions an identical structure throughout the season.
Attention now turns to recovery before the squad returns to training ahead of their semi-final tie, with the overall Supersevens champion for the 2026-27 season to be crowned at the Paris La Défense Arena final in February 2027.
