The Théâtre du Fort Antoine continued its summer programme with a moving tribute to one of France’s greatest literary figures, as the works of Marcel Pagnol were brought to life through an intimate blend of narration and live piano…
Created by Pagnol’s grandson, Nicolas Pagnol, the performance explores some of the author’s most memorable reflections on love, weaving together extracts from celebrated works including My Father’s Glory, My Mother’s Castle and Marius, alongside lesser-known correspondence and writings.
Accompanied by an original musical score composed by pianist Franck Ciup, the production creates what Nicolas Pagnol describes as the equivalent of a cinematic soundtrack, with music expressing emotions that words alone cannot convey.
The collaboration has a personal connection. Ciup revealed that he once purchased Marcel Pagnol’s own Yamaha piano at auction, adding another layer of authenticity to a performance inspired by the author’s lifelong love of music. He also noted that Pagnol’s writing possesses an inherently musical rhythm, making it a natural fit for this unique artistic partnership.
The Fort Antoine summer programme continues this week with a performance by French trio Styleto, named the Female Revelation of the Year at the 2025 Victoires de la Musique awards.
