The Princess Grace Hospital (CHPG) has taken another major step in advanced patient care with the introduction of a fifth-generation robotic surgical system capable of performing some of the most complex minimally invasive procedures…
Installed this week, the new da Vinci 5 robot carried out its first operations on Friday, making CHPG one of only two hospitals in France to use the latest-generation technology. Building on the hospital’s long-standing expertise in robotic surgery, the system will support a wide range of specialities, including hepatobiliary, colorectal, thoracic, gynaecological and urological surgery.
The new platform offers significantly greater computing power than its predecessor and introduces features including force feedback, allowing surgeons to feel tissue resistance during procedures for the first time. It also lays the groundwork for artificial intelligence, advanced imaging integration and remote surgical support, helping improve precision while reducing the risk of complications.
The robot’s capabilities were demonstrated during a gynaecological procedure that became the first of its kind in France to be performed using the da Vinci 5. Surgeons said the technology provides greater dexterity, enhanced 3D visualisation and reduced fatigue, while significantly shortening operating times.
Funded through donations to the Friends of the Princess Grace Hospital Foundation, the new system builds on a successful robotic surgery programme that has already seen more than 3,000 procedures performed at CHPG since 2013.
