Monaco’s prosecutor general has ruled out a terrorism classification for Monday’s explosion, confirming the case is instead being investigated as attempted murder.
According to the prosecutor, a suspect placed a package containing an explosive device at the entrance of the building shortly before the three victims arrived home. The device detonated moments after they entered, in what investigators believe was a deliberately planned and targeted attack.
Both adult victims have moved out of a life threatening condition, although the woman’s prognosis remains critical. The man, believed to be the intended target, has resided in Monaco since 2021. The prosecutor said no legal proceedings are currently under way against him, while the investigation into his background and the circumstances of the attack continues.
Investigators believe the suspect fled the scene alone on foot towards Beausoleil. French police are now working to retrace his movements as part of the inquiry.
He has not yet been apprehended. Monégasque and French law enforcement are continuing a coordinated search to locate and arrest the individual responsible.
