An 18-year-old man remains in police custody in Monaco after allegedly attempting to defraud an elderly couple by posing as a police officer in a scam targeting vulnerable residents…

As reported by Monaco Matin, the incident unfolded on Tuesday, June 23, when the suspect is alleged to have contacted the couple by telephone while falsely claiming to be a member of Monaco’s Public Security force. The attempted fraud was uncovered after a healthcare professional shared details of the incident on social media, explaining that one of her patients became suspicious and contacted the real police before handing over any money or valuables.

The Monaco Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the young man was arrested later that day and is being questioned by investigators from the Judicial Police Division. His police custody has been extended until Thursday evening to allow officers to continue their enquiries and establish the full circumstances of the case.

Although investigators have not disclosed the precise method used beyond the initial phone call, the case follows a series of warnings issued by the Princely Government about fraudsters impersonating police officers to target elderly residents.

Authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant. Anyone receiving suspicious calls claiming to be from the police should refuse any requests for money or valuables, end the conversation immediately, block the number where possible, and contact Monaco Public Security directly on +377 93 15 30 15.
