A uniquely Monegasque martial art has gained international exposure after the Monegasque Federation of Paijeda was invited to participate in UNESCO’s annual Sport and Well-being Day in Paris…
Organised within UNESCO headquarters, the event brings together representatives from member states and international delegations to promote sport as a tool for peace, dialogue and social cohesion. Alongside activities ranging from chess and badminton to traditional cultural workshops, Monaco’s delegation chose to highlight Paijeda, a self-defence and combat discipline created in the Principality in 2020.
Through demonstrations and exchanges with participants from around the world, federation members introduced visitors to a sport that combines physical practice with educational and cultural values. The discipline also incorporates elements of Monegasque identity, including the use of the Monegasque language and national colours.
The visit included a tour of UNESCO’s headquarters for members of the federation, many of whom were experiencing the institution for the first time. For younger participants, it offered a memorable opportunity to discover the organisation’s work in the fields of culture, heritage and education.
Representatives of the federation said Paijeda’s emphasis on respect, ethics and personal development aligns closely with UNESCO’s mission of promoting peace through education and cultural exchange. The event also provided an opportunity to showcase Monegasque culture on the international stage, reinforcing the Principality’s commitment to heritage, youth engagement and intercultural dialogue.
