Their Serene Highnesses prince Albert II and Princess Charlene began an official two-day visit to Spain on June 1, with a series of high-level meetings in Madrid aimed at reinforcing the longstanding relationship between the Principality and the Kingdom of Spain…

The Sovereign was first welcomed by HM King Felipe VI at the Palace of Zarzuela, where the two Heads of State held a working meeting followed by a private lunch. Discussions focused on the excellent ties between Monaco and Spain, which will celebrate 150 years of diplomatic relations in 2026. The talks also covered economic cooperation, international affairs and the importance of multilateralism in addressing global challenges.

Marine conservation featured prominently in the discussions, with both leaders highlighting Spain’s commitment to protecting the oceans, including its participation in MedFund, the environmental initiative established by Monaco, France and Tunisia. The upcoming Grand Départ of the Vuelta cycling race in Monaco on August 22 was also discussed, alongside cooperation in culture, science and sport.

Later in the day, Prince Albert II met with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez at the Palace of Moncloa. Accompanied by senior members of the Monegasque delegation, including Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Isabelle Berro-Amadei and Minister of the Interior Lionel Beffre, the Sovereign took part in talks centred on foreign policy, Monaco’s presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe and the evolving international geopolitical landscape.

The discussions also explored opportunities for closer cooperation in finance and environmental protection, particularly in relation to the Mediterranean. The visit underlined the strong partnership between Monaco and Spain and their shared commitment to international cooperation, sustainable development and regional stability.
