Less than a year after entering a major renovation programme, Albert I High School is preparing to welcome students for this year’s baccalaureate examinations in newly refurbished facilities…

The first phase of the project has been completed in time for the exams, which begin on June 11. Originally scheduled for full delivery at the start of the 2026-2027 academic year, the works were accelerated following concerns surrounding the temporary facilities at Annonciade. Up to 100 workers were mobilised on site to ensure key areas of the school were ready for use.

Classrooms, corridors and administrative offices have been extensively modernised, with new air conditioning, double-flow ventilation systems, improved thermal and acoustic insulation, and upgraded windows and electric blinds designed to enhance comfort for both students and staff.

The project forms part of Monaco’s BD2M sustainable building programme, which promotes environmentally responsible construction adapted to the Mediterranean climate. Rather than demolishing the historic building, authorities opted for renovation, preserving an important part of Monaco’s educational heritage while significantly improving its environmental performance.

Among the upgrades are the removal of the gas boiler, the installation of photovoltaic panels and measures to reduce the building’s carbon footprint. The school has already been awarded a BD2M Silver Medal during the design phase.

While work will continue throughout the summer, three fully renovated floors are now operational, ensuring candidates can sit their exams in modern and comfortable conditions before the completely refurbished lycée opens in September.
