Monaco officially launched its year-long celebration of Japanese culture on the esplanade of the Grimaldi Forum on the morning of Saturday, March 21, in the presence of Their Serene Highnesses Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene, alongside Her Imperial Highness Princess Akiko of Mikasa.

The opening ceremony offered a striking introduction to the programme ahead, blending tradition and artistry. Guests were treated to the powerful rhythms of traditional Taiko drumming, followed by a graceful and expressive performance by Mimoza Koiké, a Japanese dancer with the Ballets de Monte-Carlo.

The event marks the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Monaco and Japan, a milestone that will be celebrated throughout 2026 with a series of cultural, artistic and institutional events across the Principality.

In his address, Prince Albert II highlighted the strong bond between the two nations, emphasising the enduring friendship and close ties that have developed over the past two decades.

The “Japan in Monaco” programme sets the tone for a year of exchange and celebration, bringing together two cultures through shared appreciation of art, heritage and innovation.
