The Monaco Audiovisual Institute will host a special evening exploring the relationship between music and moving images on Wednesday, March 18 at 7 p.m…

The event, titled From Music to Moving Image, will take place in the institute’s small auditorium as part of this year’s Printemps des Arts festival. The evening will feature a screening followed by a discussion with French video artist Robert Cahen, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of video art in France. With a creative career spanning more than five decades, Cahen has built a body of work that bridges experimental film, electronic music and visual art.

Trained in music before turning to video, Cahen studied at the Paris Conservatory with Pierre Schaeffer, the composer who developed the concept of musique concrète. This approach treats everyday sounds as musical material, capturing and transforming them through electronic tools. Cahen later applied similar principles to the visual realm, using video technology to manipulate images and construct new visual narratives.

During the event, the audience will discover a selection of six short films illustrating the artist’s distinctive style. Some works resemble poetic “video postcards,” whilst others unfold as immersive audiovisual compositions combining layered sound and striking imagery. One of the central pieces in the programme is Hong Kong Song, a 20-minute work inspired by the artist’s travels and built from images and sounds recorded around the world.

By combining music, image and experimentation, the evening offers a rare opportunity to explore the creative dialogue between sound and visual art, whilst meeting one of the leading figures of contemporary video creation.
