Monaco’s commitment to sustainable tourism has received European recognition, with Monaco Town Hall being showcased at the European Parliament in Brussels as part of a major initiative highlighting responsible travel practices across the continent.

From Monday, January 26 to Friday, January 30, the European Parliament is hosting the exhibition “Tourism for Europe, Europe for Tourism”, organised by the European Travel Commission. The event brings together 35 exemplary projects from across Europe, each illustrating how tourism can positively contribute to environmental protection, local economies and community well-being.

Within this framework, Monaco was selected in the “Nature” category thanks to La Petite Boîte, a long-running municipal initiative aimed at reducing food waste. The programme, led by Monaco Town Hall and now marking its tenth anniversary, was highlighted as a model of practical and effective environmental action.

To mark the occasion, Marjorie Crovetto, Second Deputy Mayor responsible for Living Environment, Environment and Sustainable Development, travelled to Brussels on Monday, January 26 to represent the Municipality and present the initiative at European level. During her visit, she was received by H.E. Frédéric Labarrere, Ambassador of the Principality of Monaco to the Kingdom of Belgium, and took part in discussions around Monaco’s broader environmental policies. Estelle Antognelli, head of the Corporate Social Responsibility unit at the Monaco Tourist and Convention Authority, was also present.

Launched in 2016 in close cooperation with local restaurateurs, La Petite Boîte offers customers elegant takeaway containers that allow unfinished meals to be taken home rather than discarded. The initiative was selected from projects across Europe for its simple, accessible and immediately impactful approach. Over the past decade, more than 15,000 boxes have been distributed, preventing thousands of meals from being wasted.

Monaco Town Hall has welcomed this European recognition as a strong endorsement of its environmental strategy and of a local initiative that has become a visible symbol of the Principality’s commitment to more responsible and sustainable tourism.
