Every Wednesday and Saturday morning, Riviera Navigation in Monaco takes small groups out to sea for a unique experience: spotting dolphins, whales, and other marine life just beyond the Principality’s coastline…

Departing from the Quai des États-Unis, the four-and-a-half-hour excursion ventures into the Pelagos Sanctuary, a protected marine area where encounters with cetaceans are possible, though never guaranteed. The trips are designed to be both educational and environmentally conscious, emphasising the importance of preserving marine biodiversity for future generations. Riviera Navigation is currently working towards obtaining the High Quality Whale Watching label, which recognises operators committed to eco-responsible practices.

On a recent outing, the group’s patience was rewarded within the first hour as a sperm whale surfaced nearby, creating a moment of awe before diving again into the depths. Later, as the tour was drawing to a close, dozens of dolphins appeared around the boat, performing an impromptu display that delighted passengers for nearly half an hour. The atmosphere on board was one of joy and amazement, with many participants describing the experience as magical and unforgettable.

The €65 ticket includes a bilingual commentary in French and English, offering insights into marine mammals and the best ways to observe them responsibly. Beyond its touristic appeal, the excursion highlights an often-overlooked truth; Monaco may be famous for its glamorous coastline, but just beyond its beaches lies a rich, living marine world. For both residents and visitors, these trips serve as a reminder of the wonders of nature and the responsibility to protect them.
