Monaco’s Vice-President of the Court of Appeal, Sébastien Biancheri, has been elected as the Principality’s new judge at the European Court of Human Rights. The appointment was confirmed on Tuesday, April 8 by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), following a majority vote.

Biancheri will succeed Stéphanie Mourou-Vikström and is set to begin his nine-year term within three months. His appointment places him among the 46 judges—one from each member state of the Council of Europe—tasked with upholding the European Convention on Human Rights.

Based in Strasbourg and established in 1959, the Court is responsible for ruling on civil and political rights complaints lodged against member states. It serves over 700 million citizens across Europe, and individuals can bring cases forward once all national legal avenues have been exhausted.
