While the United States has just expanded – on April 2 – its sanctions list to include several Russian individuals and entities, including Yuri Belyakov, Vyacheslav Vidanov, and the companies Edison, Kolibri Group and Sky Frame, and on the Russian-flagged bulk carrier AM Theseus, Monaco resident Karina Rotenberg was at the same time removed from the Specially Designated Nationals list maintained by the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, the Moscow Times and several other media outlets reported.
The wife of Boris Rotenberg, a close Putin associate, Karina was added to the U.S. sanctions list in March 2022, shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine.
Boris, and his brother Arkady are frequently linked to the Russian president. According to Forbes, the U.S. Treasury Department alleged that they “provided support to Putin’s pet projects by receiving and executing high-price contracts” and “amassed enormous amounts of wealth during the years of Putin’s rule in Russia.” Among their major projects was the infamous Kerch Bridge, linking Russia to annexed Crimea.
Properties owned or controlled by the Rotenbergs in France enable Karina to indulge her enthusiasm for equestrian activities. The couple’s total assets in Monaco and France exceed 60 million euros, Forbes reports. Equestrian databases suggest that the couple own at least 24 horses, some valued at close to one million euros. Karina Rotenberg heads the Moscow Equestrian Federation, again according to Forbes.
Karina Rotenberg has been a US citizen for the past 26 years.
