Excellence in service has a new name in the Principality: Joël Darfeuille, a young hospitality professional from Menton, has been awarded the prestigious title of Best Receptionist in the World at the David Campbell Trophy competition held in Athens…
Representing the Fairmont Monte Carlo, Darfeuille’s journey is a testament to passion, resilience, and teamwork. Having started his studies at Lycée Paul Valéry in Menton before joining the renowned Ferrières School, Darfeuille trained in some of Europe’s finest establishments. Like many in the industry, his career was disrupted by the pandemic, prompting a return to his roots where he spent over three years contributing to his mother’s family-run hotel. There, he honed every aspect of the craft—from front desk reception to breakfast service and renovations.
Eager to return to the luxury hotel world, Darfeuille joined the Fairmont Monte Carlo in April 2024. Shortly after, he was encouraged by his director and reception manager to compete in the David Campbell Trophy, organised by the International Association of Front Office Managers. The competition is renowned for its intensity, combining roleplay, crisis management, and public speaking—testing not only technical skill but grace under pressure.
While the trophy is awarded to one individual, Darfeuille emphasised the collective spirit behind his success, praising his colleagues for supporting him in his preparation. “It was a solo competition,” he said, “but I never felt alone.”
His win brings international recognition to both the Fairmont Monte Carlo and Monaco’s hotel industry, further reinforcing the Principality’s reputation for excellence in hospitality.
